The collection contains records of the Confederate States of America Department of State from 1863-1865. The collection consists almost entirely of manuscript copies of letters exchanged between J.P. Benjamin, the third Secretary of State of the Confederacy, and J.M. Mason, Commissioner of the Confederacy to Great Britain and France. This collection of correspondence was probably copied and assembled for distribution to the Confederate legislature. The correspondence concerns diplomatic relations between the Confederacy and other countries, including Great Britain, France, and Mexico. Issues discussed in the correspondence include the rights of Confederate citizens traveling abroad, the attitude of France and Great Britain regarding the Confederate cause, and diplomatic efforts of the United States. The collection also contains letters of transmittal signed by J.P. Benjamin and Jefferson Davis.
